Gila monsters don’t chew their food. They swallow it whole! It can take months for them to properly digest a meal. So, Gila monsters eat only three or four times a year. Gila monsters store fat in their big tails, and this means they don’t have to eat every day like humans do.

BIG BITES

Some people once believed that the Gila monster’s breath was poison and could knock a person out. They also thought a Gila monster bite was deadly. Gila monster bites are really painful to people, but they have never killed anyone.

There are two kinds of venomous lizards in North America, and the Gila monster is one of them. In order to use its venom, a Gila monster bites, using its strong jaws to hold on tight. As the Gila monster chews, the venom flows into the bite mixed with the lizard’s spit.
